There is a long tradition of treating intelligence and emotion as distinct. Even in present-day psychology, IQ and EQ are thought of as separate (or even opposing) constructs (Goleman 1990). In contrast to dualistic conception, Piaget (1981; see Sokol and Hammond 2009) believed that all behaviors involve an affective aspect and a cognitive aspect.
